From anthropology to action: Meet Kyriaki, our new intern

From exploring gender and sexuality through dance to using documentary filmmaking to challenge stereotypes, Kyriaki Gkourgkouli is passionate about turning knowledge into meaningful change. This October, the 22-year-old social anthropology student from Greece joins the Centre for Equality and Diversity in Western Region for a nine-month internship.

Kyriaki is from Ioannina, Greece, and studies History, Archaeology and Social Anthropology at the University of Thessaly. Her academic interests focus on gender, sexuality and how these are expressed and experienced through dance.

As both a dancer and an anthropology student, she is particularly interested in how everyday practices reflect social norms and can contribute to exclusion.

Studying anthropology and being a dancer myself, I took great interest in how these two can intertwine. Looking at everyday practices, like dance, though an anthropological point of view, quickly makes one perceive the small things that slowly build up and end up creating a hostile environment for minority groups.

From theory to practical change

During her final year at university, Kyriaki completed a documentary internship, producing a short film about animal rights and speciesism.

The experience helped her discover how storytelling and visual communication can make academic knowledge accessible and encourage people to question established attitudes.

I finally felt like I could do work that matters to people and makes them question their views and stereotypes. Theory is important, but for me it was more important to be able to use it so I can make a real change.

This interest in connecting research with practical action motivated her to apply for an internship at the Centre for Equality and Diversity in Western Region, one of the two equality centres operated by KUN.

Looking forward to new experiences

From October 2026 to June 2027, Kyriaki will contribute to projects addressing gender and sexuality, while also working with communication and international cooperation.

She looks forward to gaining practical experience, exchanging perspectives and learning from colleagues working across different areas of equality and diversity.

I am really looking forward to work with the people at KUN and learn from them. I am very excited for the upcoming months and the opportunity to gain experience working on my field.

We warmly welcome Kyriaki and look forward to having her perspectives and creativity as part of our team.
