Building Equality: KUN’s Work Against Racism in Norway
Racism and discrimination undermine equality in all areas of life. At KUN Centre for Equality and Diversity, we work proactively to combat hate speech, racist bullying in schools, and workplace discrimination in Norway. Our efforts align with global concerns raised by the United Nations, but we focus on actionable solutions tailored to Norway’s context.
Understanding Racism
Racism occurs when individuals face unfair treatment or prejudice based on their origin, beliefs, culture, or skin color. It also includes harmful stereotypes that devalue people because of their group identity or unchangeable traits.
How We Address It
KUN employs an intersectional approach to tackle all forms of discrimination, recognizing how factors like ethnicity, gender, and religion overlap. Our work includes:
- Practical resources: Explore Rasismeveileder.no for guidance on rights and responses to racism in housing, healthcare, ethnic profiling, and employment.
- Education: Doavisa (public restroom newspapers) provide discreet, multilingual information on mental health, parenting, and finances for adult learners. Available in Norwegian, Arabic, English, Ukrainian, Tigrinya, and Somali.
- Training: Workshops on diversity, anti-racism strategies, and inclusive policies for municipalities, schools, and workplaces.
Key Projects & Research
We collaborate with partners to generate actionable knowledge:
- Safety at sea: Creating inclusive workplaces in maritime industries (with SINTEF).
- Youth mental health: Addressing racism’s impact on minority boys (Problematiske minoritetsgutter…).
- Digital harassment: Research on online abuse (report here).
- LGBTQ+ rights: Supporting queer minor refugees (Alene og skeiv).
Collaborate With Us
Whether you represent a municipality, business, or NGO, we welcome partnerships to:
- Develop anti-discrimination strategies (e.g., Trondheim’s action plan against antisemitism and Islamophobia).
- Co-host events like our Dialogmøter (dialogue forums) on Sami rights and immigrant inclusion.
